Doctors’ responses

Hi Suresh, since you’ve had diabetes for nearly 30 years and are on insulin, the erectile dysfunction is most likely due to long-term vascular and nerve complications from diabetes—a common issue in such cases. The good news is, it’s treatable. I strongly recommend you consult a urologist for evaluation. Tests like penile Doppler and hormonal profile (including testosterone) will help identify the exact cause. With proper treatment, including possible medications or therapy, there is a good chance of improvement. Don’t delay—treatment works best when started early.

Erectile dysfunction is one of the commonest complications from insulin dependent diabetes. As it is due to the vascular complications, few lab investigations are also necessary like HbA1c, serum testosterone, penile doppler. I would recommend you to consult urologist for thorough examination including regular checking of blood sugar levels and keeping under control. Medications would be helpful but few surgical procedures can help too, which would be better to be chosen after thorough examination.

At 49, with a 12-year history of erection issues and diabetes, it's important to know that this condition is treatable. Please consult a urologist or andrologist—there are effective medications, lifestyle changes, and treatments that can help restore sexual function even after many years.
