Do I have BPD? - #9647

Ameesha

I am struggling for so long. Currently I feel extremely hard to function my day to day life. I take everything personal and over sensitive. I had so many and have relationship and trust issues. Feels unloved everytime. In order to not get hurt, I myself push away people. The fear of abandonment kills me every second. I don't have the energy to live. I just want to die. Due to this, I decided to stop feeling anything. I'm losing feelings towards everyone and living like a robot. I'm now emotionally numb. I don't want to live like this.

Hello Ameesha, I’m truly sorry to hear about the emotional pain you’re experiencing. Your feelings of hypersensitivity, fear of abandonment, emotional numbness, and thoughts of not wanting to live are significant and warrant immediate attention. It’s crucial to reach out to a mental health professional who can provide the support and guidance you need. Therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) have been effective in addressing issues related to emotional regulation, interpersonal relationships, and trust. These therapeutic approaches can help you develop coping strategies to manage your feelings and improve your overall well-being. In India, organizations like Snehi offer confidential support for individuals facing emotional distress. You can contact Snehi at +91-22-2771-7422. Additionally, the iCall service provides mental health support and can be reached at +91-9152987821. Remember, seeking help is a sign of strength, and you don’t have to face this alone. There are professionals and organizations ready to support you through this challenging time.

Hi Aneesha, I am sorry you are going through all this alone. Few symptoms which you have mentioned like emotional instability, fear of abandonment, relationship issues, trust issues, thoughts of self harm and sometimes impulsivity; indeed point towards Borderline Personality Disorder (Also sometimes referred to as Emotionally unstable personality disorder). More often than not, it is also associated with depression and anxiety. Although it says personality disorder in the name, it is an outdated nomenclature and recent evidence shows that it is biological in nature and is very much treatable with right management (unlike other personality disorders). Management includes- 1) Anti-depressants to manage depression and anxiety 2) Mood stabilizers to manage emotional instability 3) Dialectic Behavioral Therapy - DBT (mainstay treatment) 4) Cognitive behavioral therapy (as efficacious as DBT) 5) Mindfulness techniques 6) Schema based therapy You can go through Marsha Linehan's books on the internet if you want to know more about BPD (She herself was a patient of BPD and developed DBT for treatment). Please know that you don't have to go through this alone and seek psychiatry consultation at the earliest. Regards, Dr. Charan Kumar, MD Psychiatry (NIMHANS),
