Doctors’ responses

Hi Pavan, getting white and red hair at 22 can be due to nutritional deficiencies (especially B12, D3, zinc), stress, lack of sleep, or genetics. Being vegetarian may increase the risk of B12 deficiency, which affects hair pigmentation. To help slow it down: • Take a multivitamin with B12, D3, zinc, and biotin • Eat more protein-rich foods like paneer, dal, nuts, and seeds • Improve your sleep and manage stress through yoga or meditation • Apply amla or bhringraj oil 2–3 times a week This won’t reverse existing greys but can prevent further premature greying and improve hair strength.

Premature greying and color changes in your beard and whiskers, especially at your age, are often linked to nutritional deficiencies (like B12, iron, or copper), stress, and poor sleep. Overthinking and lack of proper rest can accelerate oxidative stress in your body, which affects melanin—the pigment responsible for hair color. Being vegetarian for years is healthy, but it also increases the risk of B12 deficiency, which is only found in animal products unless supplemented. To slow down greying naturally, focus on improving sleep hygiene, manage stress with meditation or breathing exercises, and eat a balanced vegetarian diet rich in leafy greens, legumes, soaked almonds, flaxseeds, sesame seeds, and dairy. Include millets, amla, curry leaves, and dates in your meals. Avoid harsh beard products, and apply natural oils like bhringraj or coconut oil with a pinch of amla powder for nourishment. With consistent care, you can slow or stabilize the greying process.
