Doctors’ responses

Hi Priyanka, dark lips can be linked to thyroid issues, so first make sure your thyroid levels are well-controlled with proper treatment. You’ve tried many products—sometimes overuse can irritate and worsen pigmentation. Instead, focus on gentle care: • Use a fragrance-free lip balm with SPF daily • Apply ghee or pure aloe vera gel at night • Twice a week, try honey + lemon for mild natural lightening • Avoid licking lips or using harsh lip tints or scrubs If pigmentation continues despite this, a dermatologist can help rule out hormonal or allergic causes and suggest safe treatment options.

The darkening of your lips could be linked to your thyroid condition, as hypothyroidism can sometimes cause pigmentation changes in the skin, including around the lips. Some products, even if meant to help lighten or tint, may not be effective for underlying hormonal issues. It's also possible that certain lip balms or tints might have caused irritation or allergic reactions, leading to further darkening. It's important to focus on both your thyroid treatment and gentle skincare to address this naturally. To reduce pigmentation around the lips, try using natural oils like coconut oil or almond oil to hydrate and lighten over time. Honey and lemon juice (in moderation) can also help lighten darkened areas naturally. In addition, continue managing your thyroid condition with proper medication and regular tests. A good diet rich in iron, Vitamin B12, and Vitamin D can also help with both thyroid and skin health. Keep your lips moisturized with unscented, natural lip balms and protect them from the sun with an SPF lip balm to avoid further pigmentation.
