Is there any effect of anasthesia on Eryctile dysfunction ED? - #9298

Aashish

Hi, I got my colonoscopy done yesterday with sedation to rule out the cause of blood in stool and it turned out to be piles, I have noticed eryctile dysfunction today, I am not getting sexual errections properly, sometimes good but sometimes unable to maintain errection, what could be the possible reason for this? - Is it anasthesia (propofol) effect?

Doctors’ responses

Hello Ashish. As per your history, I assume that erectile dysfunction started only after the procedure. If so, it could be due to the procedure itself, by causing trauma to the perineal structures or vascular injury to the perineal blood vessels. If it's the spinal anesthesia that you have been given, there are few case reports citing that spinal anesthesia can cause erectile dysfunction due to alteration of autonomic nervous system and it is temporary condition. Kindly consult nearest sexologist / neurologist for further evaluation and assessment. Regards, Dr. Charan Kumar, MD Psychiatry (NIMHANS).

Other symptoms include low sex drive, less sexual feelings. Please let me know the cause of this?

I underwent a sedated colonoscopy on 29/03/2025 and noticed this symptom on 30/03/2025. I would like to mention that I am able to engage in intercourse with my wife without issues. However, I have observed that while my erection used to occur within approximately five seconds, it now takes longer. Additionally, there is no pre-ejaculatory fluid, although I am still able to ejaculate and experience pleasure.

I am also using the following medication: 1. Oxerute cd tablets - 2 tablets/day 2. Cremaffin plus syrup - 10ml every night 3. Renerve pfs (vitamin b12 shots) - weekly once 4. Hnu D3 ( vitamin d shots) - weekly once
I would suggest you consult any nearby urologist for further assessment. You might require few tests to check for vascular patency of blood vessels of perineal and penile regions which could have been impacted by the procedure. Low sex drive and decreased sexual feelings could be secondary to this sudden experience you have faced, which could be very stressful understandably. The medications you mentioned are all vitamins and cannot explain the erectile dysfunction you are having.
Thanks for sharing openly. Since you had a colonoscopy with sedation (likely using propofol) just yesterday and now notice erectile dysfunction, it’s understandable to feel concerned. Temporary issues with erections can happen after sedation due to several factors—stress, anxiety about the procedure, lingering effects of the sedative, or even changes in blood flow or nervous system activity. Propofol is generally short-acting, but in some people, especially if they’re anxious or sensitive to meds, it can cause a mild dip in libido or erectile response for a day or two. More likely, this is a temporary response—your body is recovering from the procedure and your mind may still be in a heightened state of stress or subconscious worry (especially since blood in stool can trigger fear). If you're occasionally getting good erections, that’s a positive sign and strongly points toward functional or stress-related ED, not a permanent issue. Focus on rest, hydration, light activity, and give it a few days. If the issue persists beyond a week or worsens, it’s okay to get hormone levels or circulation checked. Most likely though, you’ll be back to normal soon.
