Doctors’ responses

Dear Shiv Agarwal, I understand that losing 2 kg over the past year, especially with your long-standing diabetes, might be concerning for you. At 78 years old, maintaining a stable weight is important for your overall strength and well-being. While your HbA1c of 7.5% indicates moderate blood sugar control, your elevated FT3 (6.00 pg/ml) could be a key factor in your weight loss. What Could Be Causing Your Weight Loss? ✔ Thyroid Overactivity (Hyperthyroidism?) – Your FT3 is above the normal range (typically 2.3-4.2 pg/ml), which may indicate an overactive thyroid. This can speed up metabolism, leading to weight loss, fatigue, and muscle breakdown. A full thyroid panel (TSH, T4, antibodies) should be checked to confirm. ✔ Diabetes & Muscle Loss – In diabetes, muscle loss (sarcopenia) can occur, especially if blood sugar fluctuates or if protein intake is low. ✔ Age-Related Factors – As we age, appetite naturally decreases, and digestion can slow down, affecting nutrient absorption. What You Can Do Now ✅ Check Thyroid Thoroughly – Get a TSH & Free T4 test to confirm if thyroid issues are contributing to weight loss. ✅ Focus on a High-Protein Diet – Include eggs, paneer, dal, nuts, and lean meats to prevent muscle loss. Small, frequent meals can help. ✅ Mild Strength Exercises – Light resistance training (even chair exercises) helps prevent muscle loss and improves metabolism. ✅ Diabetes-Friendly Weight Gain – Healthy fats like almonds, walnuts, avocados, and olive oil can help maintain weight without spiking blood sugar. ✅ Medical Follow-up – If weight loss continues, a full-body checkup (including kidney, liver, and gastrointestinal health) may be needed. Since the weight loss is gradual, it’s not alarming yet, but staying proactive is key. A thyroid imbalance, if present, can be treated easily, and with the right nutrition plan, you can maintain your strength and energy. Take care and stay strong!

Hello shiv , 2 kg weight loss over the period of 1 year is not significant weight loss and as your diabetic control is moderate I would suggest not to worry much about it but continue regular weight monitoring
